The user interface starts off a little busy, but overall it’s very well done. This game kept us hooked pretty much from the start of each game until the end, which was a nice, bite-sized length. And it keeps you hooked long after that as you struggle to compete with your opponents with enough money to make you fear a buyout while others are racing through the headquarters levels. The shotgun start with everyone beginning at the same time adds a certain amount of urgency as your scout out your first locations. Offworld trading company wastes no time immersing you in the game. Claims are finite and allow you to take ownership of a cell. You will also need to identify where your initial batch of claims will be. You can review those advantages in the graphic below. The base game has four (an expansion adds two more) that you can select from the Scientific, Scavenger, Expansive and Robotic headquarters and each type comes with its own advantages (see graphic below). The first strategy game element involves the selection of which of the four types of headquarters you want to play as. You can develop patents which are advantages granted only to the first player to research them, the other is a more traditional increase in productivity. To further add to the game, there are two types of research that can be done as well. The game encourages manipulation of the in-game stock market, brazen attacks on your opponents’ facilities, and “black market” purchases of claims. The game focuses on research collection and growth, but it also features several twists. The game features several different starting “teams” that come with different perks. Offworld Trading Company, built by Mohawk games (a subsidiary of Stardock), is a space-based business simulation game set on Mars.
